How WMGC created a one-stop production hub to streamline filming and grow the regional screen economy

For years, the West Midlands has been an increasingly attractive location for filmmakers, but navigating the region’s diverse locations, talent, and facilities could be complex and time-consuming. Productions often faced challenges coordinating permits, securing an experienced crew, or finding the right spaces to bring their vision to life. The region needed a centralised service to simplify the process and support the growing screen economy.

Enter Production Central WM

Launching on 20th November 2025,  WMGC developed Production Central WM in response to industry feedback that the region needed a single, coordinated gateway to make filming simpler. The service is backed by the Mayor of the West Midlands and West Midlands Combined Authority, and in collaboration with Create Central, as part of the region’s commitment to growing the creative industries. Production Central WM brings together everything a production needs, creating more opportunities for local crews, suppliers, and businesses across the West Midlands.

Previously, productions had to navigate multiple contacts and processes across the region, and now there’s one coordinated team to ensure projects stay on schedule, on budget, and on location. The impact goes beyond logistics, by simplifying the production process, it positions the West Midlands as a viable, competitive destination for film and TV production across the UK and internationally.

For the region, the launch represents more than just a new service, it’s an investment in the economy, creating opportunities for local crews, businesses, and communities to engage with high-profile productions.

With Production Central WM, the West Midlands is ready to support the next generation of film and television projects, strengthening the region's position as a creative hub.

Studios and Established Production

The West Midlands' rich creative heritage and iconic locations make it a natural backdrop for compelling storytelling. Productions like Peaky Blinders have demonstrated the global appeal of the region, drawing attention to its streets and architecture and sparking tourism in Birmingham and beyond. Today, the area is building on this legacy with new studio spaces such as Digbeth Loc Studios and a growing network of local crew, suppliers, and creative talent, ensuring it can meet increasing production demand.

High-profile projects are already taking advantage of this infrastructure, recent moves such as MasterChef relocating to Birmingham highlight the region’s growing appeal to major productions. By supporting both studio-based and location productions, the region is establishing itself as a thriving hub for film and television, ready to nurture the next generation of filmmakers.

Diverse Locations

The West Midlands offers a variety of dynamic locations that suit different types of productions. From modern cityscapes and industrial heritage sites to rolling countryside and historic towns, the region provides the versatility to create multiple on-screen worlds without the need for extensive travel.

Skilled talent, established studios, and diverse locations make the West Midlands a production-ready region, with Production Central WM at the heart of it all.

A Platform for Growth

The launch of Production Central WM addresses a long-standing need for the region, giving filmmakers a clear, coordinated way to work in the West Midlands. Now, instead of piecing together contacts or searching for the right people, productions have one place to go, one team coordinating the process from first inquiry to final wrap.

With Production Central WM in place, the region now has the coordinated infrastructure it needs to attract more production, develop local talent, and unlock new economic opportunities.
