Professor Sir David Eastwood became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham in April 2009. Previously, he was Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Former posts also included Vice-Chancellor of the University of East Anglia, Chief Executive of the Arts and Humanities Research Board, Chair of the Russell Group, Board Member of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, and Chair of Universities Superannuation Scheme (2015-20).
Sir David held a chair in Modern History at the University of Wales, Swansea, where he was also a Pro-Vice-Chancellor. While at Swansea he co-founded the National Centre for Public Policy.
Sir David was a member on numerous national committees including the Browne Review, Nurse Review, and is a member of the Education Honours Committee. He is currently Chair of Universitas 21, Board Member and Non-Executive Director of INTO University Partnerships, Arts and Humanities Research Council Member, Board Member of the Russell Group, and serves as an International Member of the Hong Kong University Grants Committee.
